THE IMPACT OF USING CHATGPT VOICE MODE ON SPEAKING FLUENCY AMONG EFL STUDENTS

Speaking fluency remains one of the most difficult skills for EFL learners to develop, as it requires real-time production of language while managing vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and confidence at once. Various communicative and technology-assisted strategies have been used to support students' speaking practice, but these approaches are often limited by classroom time constraints or a lack of genuine, two-way interaction. Voice-enabled conversational agents such as ChatGPT Voice Mode offer a new opportunity for more natural and flexible spoken practice, yet empirical evidence on their effectiveness in improving speaking fluency, and on whether the amount of practice relates to the degree of improvement, remains limited. This study aimed to determine whether the use of ChatGPT Voice Mode significantly improves the speaking fluency of EFL students, and to examine whether students' total practice duration was significantly related to their fluency gains. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was used. Fifteen fourth-semester English Department students at Madura University initially took part; three did not complete the speaking practice sessions and were excluded, resulting in a final sample of eleven participants. All participants practiced speaking using ChatGPT Voice Mode over two weeks, with individual practice duration recorded separately for each participant. Speaking fluency was measured through three indicators—speech rate, mean length of runs, and pause frequency—interpreted in relation to CEFR fluency descriptors. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, paired-samples t-test, effect size (Cohen's d), Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression with SPSS. The findings showed that Mean Length of Runs and Pause Frequency improved significantly after treatment (p = 0.001 and p = 0.034, respectively), with a large effect size for Mean Length of Runs (d = 1.32) and a medium-to-large effect size for Pause Frequency (d = 0.74), whereas Speech Rate showed no significant improvement (p = 0.478, d = 0.22). Practice duration was significantly correlated with, and significantly predicted, improvement in Mean Length of Runs (r = 0.708, p = 0.015; R² = 0.502), but not in Speech Rate or Pause Frequency. The interpretive CEFR alignment supported these results, showing the clearest upward shifts in proficiency level for Mean Length of Runs. This study concludes that ChatGPT Voice Mode contributed positively to EFL students' speaking fluency, particularly in enhancing speech continuity, and that longer practice duration was associated with greater improvement in this dimension, while speaking speed appeared to require a longer treatment period to show measurable gains.
